Why did you choose to complete your post-doc at UF? The University of Florida is a leading public university with strong global health focus. The Fogarty Indo-US training program by Dr. Linda Cottler has a long history and very well known in India for its special emphasis on strengthening research capacity in brain and nervous system disorders. The Department of Epidemiology at UF has world class faculty members with diverse expertise and has a very supportive Chair.
Long Term Career Goals: My goals are to reduce mental health disparities and treatment gap in India. I also want to develop innovative substance use interventions in the community and contribute new knowledge to train next generation of psychiatric social workers.
What philosophy guides your education?: I have many and some of my favorites are:
“the Goal of Education is to teach how to think” – Martin Luther King Jr.
“To move forward, we have to leave something behind” – Interstellar
“but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep” – Robert Frost
Perform your duty equipoised, abandoning all attachment to success or failure. Such equanimity is called Yoga!!! – (समत्वं योग उच्यते) Samatvam Yoga Uchyate (Bhagavad Gita 2.48)
What do you see as the most pressing public health problem facing the world today? Non-communicable disorders, especially substance use disorders and mental health disorders – the invisible epidemic!!!
