Arvind Nongpiur, MBBS, DPM, MD

Fogarty Postdoctoral Fellow

Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), Mawdiangdiang, Shillong, India

Hometown: Shillong, Meghalaya, India
Research Interests: Child and adolescent psychiatric disorders, addition psychiatry.
Long-term career goals: My main aim is to develop a research program in the Department of Psychiatry at NEIGRIHMS, focused on child and adolescent behavioral and addiction disorders and incorporating epidemiology, risk factor assessment, and clinical studies. I believe that by fostering a multidisciplinary approach involving the community, schools and inter-departmental clinicians and researchers, it would have the potential to better tailor prevention, identification, and treatment modalities specific to the region.
What philosophy guides your education? “Dream is not that which you see while sleeping it is something that does not let you sleep.” – Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam
What do you see as the most pressing public health problems facing the world today? Chronic non-communicable disorders including mental disorders are on the rise and with the ever-increasing gap in the treatment delivery system, the problem will only worsen. Future oriented preventative programs should be the focus and specific to each region which will lessen the burden of the health care system and foster healthy practices in the community.
