History and Impact
The DIS+SAM has a long history beginning with the psychiatric epidemiology field. It was first developed in 1978 at the request of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). At the time, the NIMH was beginning to organize its Epidemiologic Catchment Area (ECA) Program and needed a comprehensive diagnostic instrument for a large-scale, multicenter epidemiological study that could be administered by either lay interviewers or clinicians.
Since its first use in the ECA study, the DIS has been used across a wide range of projects and was adopted by the World Health Organization to create the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI). Newer versions of the DIS and SAM have been produced to take into account revisions to the DSM (DSM-III-R, DSM-IV, and now DSM-5).

Training
Training is included in the cost of a DIS+SAM license and is required for those using the DIS or SAM for the first time and for those who want a refresher.
License holders and their staff members or designated interviewers should participate.
On-demand training is offered year-round via Zoom and uses lectures, hands-on practice, homework assignments, and mock interviews.
- Training includes:
- DSM-5 criteria and scoring for each diagnosis
- How each criterion is operationalized by the DIS+SAM
- How to effectively navigate the interview
- Production and interpretation of reports
- Conversion of data into datasets for analysis
