About Peter J Carek

Peter J. Carek, MD, MS is professor and chair in the Department of Community Health and Family Medicine at the University of Florida as well as holds the C. Sue and Louis C. Murray, M.D. Professor in Family Medicine. Dr. Carek attended medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, SC where he also completed his family medicine residency training. He completed a fellowship in sports medicine at the Ohio Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Clinic and the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. He served as director of the Trident/MUSC Family Medicine Residency Program from 1995 to 2012. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). Dr. Carek also holds a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Primary Care Sports Medicine.

Dr. Carek has authored/co-authored over 95 articles for peer-reviewed journals as well as over 30 chapters, monographs and articles for non-peered reviewed journals and has presented over 130 invited presentations and over 95 submitted presentations during meetings of national and international medical organizations. He has served as board member and treasurer of the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors, the Chair of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Council of Review Committee Chairs and Chair of the ACGME Review Committee for Family Medicine. His was also a member of the ACGME Board of Directors and Executive Committee as well as serving on the ACGME Common Program Requirements Phase 1 and Physician Well-Being Task Forces. He has served as principal investigator on several Health Resources and Services Administration funded grants.

Dr. Carek has reviewed for numerous medical journals, including American Family Physician, Annals of Family Medicine, Journal of Family Practice, JAMA, and Annals of Family Medicine. In addition, he served as a guest co-editor for the Annals of Family Medicine Resident Research Supplement in 2008. Dr. Carek was the recipient of the ACGME Parker J. Palmer “Courage to Teach” Award in 2009 and the American Academy of Family Physicians’ (AAFP) Nikitas J. Zervanos Outstanding Program Director Award in 2010. In 2017, he received the F. Marian Bishop Leadership Award from the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Foundation. His areas of interest include graduate and continuing medical education, quality improvement in patient care and medical education, and sports medicine. He has national recognition as a leader in implementing quality improvement into faculty medicine residency programs as well as patient care activities. He has examined the impact of evidence-based guidelines in physician performance and quality of medical care, used numerous quality improvement tools including patient registries in medical education and clinical care, and assisted physicians using reflective learning technique in assessing their clinical performance.
