Epidemiology’s First Graduate Awarded NIMHD R01 Grant

Jennifer M. Reingle Gonzalez, PhD, the Department of Epidemiology’s first PhD graduate, recently received a $3.3 million R01 grant from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD). Dr. Gonzalez is an associate professor in the Department of Epidemiology, Human Genetics and Environmental Sciences at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Public Health in Dallas.

Dr. Gonzalez will study a smartphone app designed to assess and modify health behaviors among homeless adults who have previously been incarcerated. Homeless adults are more likely to spend time in jail and more likely to return to jail after incarceration than adults who are not homeless. She hopes that use of the app will reduce re-arrest rates.

Dr. Gonzalez was also recently promoted to associate professor and assistant regional dean and tenured. Congratulations to our “number 1 graduate” on her many recent accomplishments!
