Research Assistant Professor in Epidemiology Deepthi Varma, PhD, MPhil, MSW, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Healthy Start of North Central Florida Coalition. Florida’s Healthy Start initiative provides for universal risk screening of all Florida’s pregnant women and newborn infants to identify those at risk of poor birth, health, and developmental outcomes. The goals of Healthy Start are to reduce infant mortality, reduce the number of low birth weight babies, and improve health and developmental outcomes. As part of the North Central Florida Coalition, Dr. Varma will be helping lead the charge to provide quality maternal and child health care in 12 counties in North Central Florida. We are incredibly proud of Dr. Varma for this honor, and we cannot wait to see how she works to improve health care and health outcomes for the next generation of Floridians.
