Two Epidemiology PhD Students were given Travel Awards by CPDD

CPDDTravelAwardsThe College on Problems of Drug Dependence (CPDD) held its 76th Annual meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico this year. Two Epidemiology PhD students were honored with travel awards for this conference. Abenaa Acheampong won the Primm-Singleton Travel Award, given to a graduate student with a demonstrated commitment to research and/or teaching in substance abuse. This award funded her airfare, lodging, and other expenses. While at the conference she presented her poster, Gender differences in polysubstance use among those who misuse prescription opioids co-written with Dr. Cottler, Epidemiology Chair, and Dr. Vidot of the University of Miami. Sonam Lasopa, one of our Fogarty Research Fellows, also received a travel award: the NIDA Women & Sex/Gender Junior Investigator Travel Award. This award was given to 27 junior investigators whose CPDD abstract on women or gender differences was accepted for a poster, oral session, or symposium. Sonam was chosen to lead an oral presentation on the topic, Gender differences in risk factors for nonmedical use of prescription stimulants among youth 10 to 18 years in the U.S. Her Epidemiology co-authors Drs. Cottler, Vaddiparti, and Striley also attended the conference.
